Privacy policy

AuroraMeteo works without accounts, sign-ups or advertising trackers. This page lists everything that is processed when you use the site.

Who is responsible

AuroraMeteo is an independent, ad-free aurora forecasting project.

Visiting the site

The site is delivered through Cloudflare (content delivery and protection against attacks) and our own server. To deliver a page, your browser's IP address, the page requested, the time and your browser type are processed. Cloudflare and our server keep short technical logs for security and troubleshooting; our server keeps them for at most 14 days. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in a secure, working website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Cloudflare acts as our processor; data may be processed in the USA under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses.

Your approximate location

To suggest the town nearest to you, our server looks up your IP address in a database stored on our own server (DB-IP City Lite). The result — roughly your city — is used for that page view only and is neither stored nor shared.

If you tap "Use my location", your browser asks for permission and sends your position, rounded to about 1 km, once, to find the nearest town. It is not stored. Legal basis: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you give in the browser and can refuse.

"I see it" reports

A report stores the place, the kind of report (eye, camera, cloudy) and the time — no IP address, account or precise location. To stop duplicate and abusive reports, a random code is kept in your browser and your IP address is used briefly in the server's memory (scrambled with a key that changes daily, never written to disk). Reports are kept for 7 days in the live ranking and then only in daily backups for up to 30 days.

Cookies and storage in your browser

We set no cookies. A few settings are kept in your browser's local storage, only so the site works as you set it:

  • theme (light/dark) and night-vision mode
  • that you closed the language hint or the storm bar
  • a random code that prevents duplicate "I see it" reports
  • your nearest town for the current session, so it is not looked up on every page

Interactive map

The interactive map loads map tiles and fonts from OpenFreeMap (based on OpenStreetMap) only when you open it, or when it scrolls into view on the forecast page. Like any web request, this shares your IP address with OpenFreeMap. All other images, fonts and maps come from our own server.

Email

If you write to hello@aurorameteo.com, the message is forwarded by Cloudflare Email Routing to our mailbox and kept only as long as needed to answer you.

Forecast data

Space-weather, cloud and other data are fetched by our server from NOAA, MET Norway, GFZ and other sources. Your data is never sent to them.

Partner links

Some pages may show clearly marked partner links (hotels, tours). They are ordinary links; the partner's own privacy policy applies once you are on their site.

Your rights

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction, data portability and to object to processing, and to withdraw consent at any time. Write to hello@aurorameteo.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data-protection supervisory authority, in particular in the EU country where you live.
