Practical information for Greenland
- Emergency number
- 112
- Access to land
- There is no privately owned land in Greenland and the backcountry is unrestricted, so you may roam and camp freely as long as you keep away from houses; exceptions are protected areas (e.g. Taseralik in Ilulissat) and Northeast Greenland National Park, which requires a permit from the Greenland Government.
- Winter driving
- There are no roads connecting towns in Greenland (only within and around settlements, plus a few tracks to sheep farms in South Greenland), so aurora trips are on foot, by tour vehicle, snowmobile or dog sled from town; no national road-conditions service applies.
- Drones
- Greenland is outside the EU drone framework (EU A1/A3/A2 certificates are not valid); flights fall under Danish regulation BL 9-4, which requires operating outside urban areas, not overflying people or property, and staying under 100 m AGL unless exempted by the Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority (Trafikstyrelsen): https://www.en.droneregler.dk/drone-flying-abroad/drone-flying-in-greenland
- Weather service
- DMI (Danish Meteorological Institute) – Greenland
Greenland Police (politi.gl) list a central alarm line, 701448, in addition to 112.
Polar bears can occur near some settlements (e.g. Ittoqqortoormiit); Visit Greenland advises not camping outside town there unless accompanied by an armed person.
