The Kp scale in plain words

Kp is a 0–9 score for how strongly the Earth's magnetic field is being shaken by the solar wind. The higher it goes, the further from the poles the northern lights reach. Kp 0–2 is a quiet night; Kp 5 and above is a geomagnetic storm.

  1. Kp 0–2 Quiet eye in Ylläs (Äkäslompolo) Only under the auroral oval: northern Norway, Swedish and Finnish Lapland, Iceland, Alaska, northern Canada.
  2. Kp 3 Unsettled next 24 h Bright in the Arctic; low on the horizon in central Scandinavia and southern Iceland.
  3. Kp 4 Active Overhead in the Arctic; low in the north from southern Norway, Sweden, Finland and northern Scotland.

Hills and mountains

The horizon towards the north is open (terrain below 1.0°), so low aurora is not blocked.

Local knowledge

  • Visit Ylläs gives the aurora season as late August to mid-April, and FMI puts the odds at roughly half of all dark, cloudless nights at Ylläs.
  • The Ylläs Swing on the shore of Lake Äkäslompolo, signposted from behind the K-market Jounin Kauppa, faces Kesänki fell and the northern sky. On calm autumn nights the lake reflects the aurora.
  • Auroras are most likely around midnight and in the couple of hours before, and if you can see even one star a display is possible.
  • The Ylläksen Yöpuu northern-lights camera by Lake Äkäslompolo and the FMI aurora forecast help you decide when to head out.
  • Kittilä Airport is about 50 km by road from Äkäslompolo.
  • Wind on the open fell tops can make it feel much colder, especially on Kukastunturi.

Do not park in yards, cross private land, block traffic or park on the road itself.

For longer outings, bring a charged phone plus a map and compass, because it gets dark quickly and conditions on the fells change fast.
